Nanakorobi

(The Process) To board this piece, Gaby listened to the music - using it as inspiration for each obstacle. Gaby worked closely with composer and creator Glenna Burmer to draw up environments inspired by Glenna’s mother’s prolific career as a Sumi-e painter. The setting, Hokkaido in the winter aimed to depict both the perilous conditions of winter and beauty of it’s minimalistic landscape.

(The Brief) Create a story based on the Japanese Proverb Nana korobi ya oki (ななころびやおき) “fall down seven times, get up eight times”

(Roles) Director , Art Director, Concept Artist, Storyboarding, Background Design and Character Design.

(The Challenge) Create a narrative to existing music with a fixed timing between seven parts.

(The Outcome) A short film that put picture to the music of its creator and won over 50 awards in animation festivals worldwide.
